Mattress Types

Innerspring | Memory Foam | Latex | Air | Water
Because of technological advances and medical developments, today's mattress sets are not the same as those made 10 years ago. Industry research and development has improved mattress and foundation engineering to provide optimum comfort, support and durability. A new sleep set that incorporates these advances can lead to a better night's sleep. Mattress Showroom only carries mattresses with the latest advances in sleep technology.
Common types of mattresses include innerspring, memory foam, and latex. Mattresses containing supporting functions of air and water are less popular but are also available. Futons are a final option, sometimes used as a low budget or space saving option.
Innerspring or Spring Coil Mattress The most common and widely purchased kind of mattress is known as an innerspring or spring coil mattress. The construction of this type of mattress uses a base of tempered steel coils (springs) to help provide support to your body. Layers of upholstery provide insulation and cushioning between your body and the spring unit. The result of this basic approach, coupled with state-of-the-art technology, is a full range of comfort choices.
Quality is important when choosing any kind of mattress, but with an innerspring mattress it is even more essential. Many things go into finding a quality innerspring mattress including the thickness of the coils, the number of coils, and how they are connected together. A high coil count doesn’t automatically mean it's a better product. It's a combination of top quality innerspring system and superior upholstery materials that makes the difference.

Memory Foam Mattress Another kind of mattress is a memory foam mattress. These are becoming increasingly popular as more begin to realize the incredible benefits these provide. The memory foam “cradles” your body, offering total body comfort and support. The density of the foam within a memory foam mattress affects it’s feel and support. A quality memory foam mattress will have a density between 4.0 and 5.0 lbs, however, they can be even denser than that. Unless you have back problems, or a very firm mattress is recommended by your physician, a 4-5.0 lb density mattress will work for almost anyone.

Latex Foam Mattress A third kind of mattress is a latex foam mattress. These mattresses are known for being extremely long lasting, and usually run on the mid- to high-end of the pricing scale. Both natural and synthetic (or a combination of the two) latex mattresses are available. For those with contact allergies to latex, the foam is thoroughly washed and carefully encased in a quilted cover, ensuring carefree use.

Air Mattress Airbeds are now designed to look like the familiar mattress/box spring combination, with an air-filled core providing the support instead of an innerspring unit or foam core. These designs also offer a range of feels and typically are adjustable to suit individual (or couple) sleepers' needs.

Water Mattress Water mattresses have taken on a new life, compared to the big bag of water that people slept on in the '70s. The newest waterbed designs are built to look like the familiar mattress/foundation, with a water-filled core providing the support and layers of upholstery for insulation and surface comfort. Heating is no longer necessary due to the insulated materials, and firmness can usually be adjusted by simply adding or removing water volume. Quality construction is especially critical when water is involved, so look for assurance that the vinyl and seaming are designed for maximum durability.
